School Administrator, May, 1998

The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics has issued a new report that examines federal financial support for schools over the last 17 years.

"Federal Support for Education: Fiscal Years 1980-1997" includes these findings:

* Budgeted federal funds for education at all levels rose 42 percent since 1990 in current dollars, 16 percent after adjustments for inflation.

* Since 1980, such support for elementary and secondary education has increased 37 percent in constant dollars.
