April E. Jones

After a two-decade stint in the Pasco, Wash., schools, April Jones has assumed the superintendency of the Sierra Sands Unified Schools in Ridgecrest, Calif. Jones was deputy superintendent in Pasco since 1995. Earlier, she served as executive director of curriculum and secondary education and principal of an elementary school.

Alan K. Lindquist

Alan Lindquist has assumed the top berth in the Ephrata, Pa., schools after a 2 1/2-year stint as superintendent of the Millcreek Township, Pa., district. He earlier served as superintendent of the Union School District in Rimersburg, Pa., and the Spring Grove, Pa., Area Schools. Lindquist was a teacher or principal in four other districts.

Jo Beth D. Newton

After 4 1/2 years as assistant superintendent for instruction, Jo Beth Newton has been elevated to the superintendency of the Homewood, Ala., City Schools. Newton earlier spent 10 years in the Fairfield, Ala., district, where she started as a teacher. She subsequently served as assistant superintendent for curriculum and business.

Searetha Smith

The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners has appointed Searetha Smith as the district's first chief academic officer. Smith was serving as associate superintendent for instruction and accountability in Richmond, Va. Earlier, she was executive director of curriculum and instruction in Bothell, Wash., and a principal in Seattle.

Bill M. Wise

Following a six-month period as interim superintendent, Bill Wise has been named to the superintendency of the Metropolitan Nashville, Tenn., Public Schools. Wise earlier served the district for 27 years as deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent for business and facility services. Previously, Wise was a teacher in Florence, Ala.

Marilyn Zaretsky

A 32-year veteran of the South Huntington Union Free Schools in Huntington Station, N.Y., Marilyn Zaretsky recently was promoted to the superintendency. Previously, Zaretsky served as deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent for instruction. She also worked as director of resource management.
