Learning about learning communities - Editor's Note

School Administrator, May, 2003

I've been wondering about all the fuss of late about something called "professional learning communities?" What is this? And how do you build one?

That's the emphasis of this month's editorial offerings, which we think provide insights into what exactly is involved in developing and sustaining a school culture that's conducive to student learning and professional growth.

Veteran journalist Scott LaFee examines five school districts whose superintendents are in the midst of ventures to build learning communities. Rick DuFour, a former superintendent turned consultant, details some of the leadership practices that can facilitate such growth. And Rebecca Burnerte DuFour writes from a principal's perspective on how the central office can best advance the cause at school sites.

We're especially excited to offer you an exclusive interview with Peter Senge, whose work about learning organizations in The Fifth Discipline has been a favorite of many school leaders for the past decade. Senge continues to run the Society for Organizational Learning in Cambridge, Mass., and he has been working closely with Les Omotani, superintendent in West Des Moines, Iowa, whose work is profiled in LaFee's piece.

We know many other school leaders have committed their time and resources to building professional learning communities in their districts. We hope to hear from some of you in the months ahead.
