An Enduring Name

School Administrator, June, 1996

Walter Sickles may be retiring this month from the superintendency in Hillsborough County, Fla., but his name will linger around school board offices for quite some time.

Board members opted to name a new high school after Sickles, 62, who has held the top spot since 1989 when he succeeded Raymond Shelton, a past president of AASA. The district's central-office building is named after Shelton.

The school board also named a new high school after a retired assistant superintendent, Paul R. Wharton, 81. Wharton continues to volunteer on the district's disciplinary panel.
