Pennies from Heaven - Grapeving-Colleyville school district allows advertising on buses and buildings - Brief Article

School Administrator, June, 1997

Commercial advertisers have a new venue for promoting their products and services: the roofs of school buses and school buildings in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District.

Beginning July 1, the district is offering aerial advertising, as well as signage on the sides of buses, in school gyms, and at the football stadium under a plan expected to bring in between $100,000 and $150,000 in 1997-98. Advertisers can choose from levels ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

The aerial ads are attractive because the district is adjacent to the busy Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and thousands of planes cruise just above the roads filled with buses carrying the district's 12,400 students.

Before the school board unanimously approved the revenue plan, a district resident asked if an ad featuring a supermodel would be allowed. According to district spokeswoman Louise Henry, the response was: "As long as they follow the school dress code."
