American Association of School Administrators Candidates for National Office

School Administrator, August, 1995

It's time to cast your ballot for AASA's elected leadership.

The School Administrator has compiled brief biographical sketches of all declared contenders for president-elect and executive committee based on information provided by each candidate. Each candidate also was asked why he or she was running for office.

Under the AASA bylaws, members will receive an official election ballot by mail in late September. Completed ballots must be returned to AASA with a postmark of Oct. 15 or earlier.

Those elected will take office in March 1996.

Why are you seeking election?

AASA must be a powerful force in American education. At a time when children are greatly in need of people to speak out on their behalf, I believe I can impact positively on the economic and philosophical challenges of the association.

As programs for children are threatened, we in AASA representing school leaders throughout the country must not be faint of heart, mind, or determination. We must be willing to step forward for all children.

We seem to be living in a time when abandoning compassion has been made respectable and fashionable, and AASA must vehemently say "No."

Robert A. Winter

Current position: superintendent, Tuscaloosa City Schools, Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Education: B.S., Montclair State University; M.A., Seton Hall University; Ed.D., Rutgers University

AASA activities: 20-year member; member, AASA Executive Committee; liaison, Suburban Superintendents and Urban Superintendents; former chair and member, Resolutions Committee; former parliamentarian, Delegate Assembly; member, Women's Caucus; representative, Conference on Children and Families and Harvard Institute for School Leadership.

Other activities: past president, New Jersey Association of School Administrators; past chair, New Jersey Environmental Task Force; former member, New Jersey Ethics Commission; member, Alabama Association of School Administrators; member, Horace Mann League; 15-year I/D/E/A participant.

Why are you seeking election?

As educational leaders, we are dedicated to helping children achieve their potential, and we recognize that society must dedicate resources commensurate with this goal. Business as usual, however, cannot be our theory or practice. AASA needs to be restructured to achieve this mission.

Having successfully served in urban, suburban, and rural districts, I possess the knowledge to represent the diverse interests of colleagues. Further, my extensive leadership in state and county administrator groups, plus my experience as an AASA Executive Committee member, have helped refine my organizational development skills and my ability to effectively articulate AASA policies.

If you are seeking influence on the national educational agenda, high-quality professional development opportunities and an assurance that AASA is using resources in a cost-efficient manner, vote for Bob Winter.

Executive Committee (two positions open)

Blanche E. Fraser

Current position: superintendent, Mount Clemens Community School District, Mount Clemens, Mich.

Education: B.S., Western Michigan University; M.A., Western Michigan University; Ph.D., Michigan State University

AASA activities: 13-year member; member, AASA Executive Committee; former chair, Audit Committee; former chair, International and Global Education Committee; former member, Federal Policy and Legislation Committee; member, Women's Caucus; former member, Delegate Assembly; member, AASA Legislative Corps; 1992 Michigan Superintendent of the Year

Other activities: past president, Michigan Association of School Administrators; member, Michigan 2000 Commission; adjunct faculty, Wayne State University

Why are you seeking election?

Appointed to the Executive Committee in 1994, I have had a unique opportunity to participate in a governance structure committed to transforming our professional organization to better meet the needs of our members, the students, and the schools we serve.

I want to continue my service on the Executive Committee with a three-year elected term and will work to ensure that AASA puts children first. There is no higher professional calling for AASA than being the advocate for our nation's children.

My pledge is to work with you and for you in positioning AASA to successfully address the challenges of the 21st century.
