Part-time Leadership

School Administrator, Oct, 1995

Half the work at half the pay.

That's the arrangement Gilbert Reynolds worked out with his school committee to remain as superintendent of Supervisory Union 60 on a part-time basis in 1995-96, rather than retire. Reynolds, 48, had served as superintendent/principal of the 400-student district the past four years.

He works alternate 3-day, 2-day work weeks for a salary of $22,500, half of what he previously earned. He says he "tactfully declined" a raise and an expense account from the school committee.

"It's a good arrangement," says Reynolds. "I'm no longer responsible for day-to-day management of the school (with the hiring of a full-time principal). I've had to give up cafeteria duty."
