Reading Comprehension - Abstract

School Administrator, Oct, 2002

A new study by RAND of reading comprehension, "Reading for Understanding: Toward an R&D Program in Reading Comprehension," suggests more focused research will produce knowledge that is usable in classrooms and in policymaking.

The study states: "All high school graduates are facing an increased need for a high degree of literacy." It claims that better reading education at a younger age is the answer to the problem.

The lead author of the study is Catherine Snow, the Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Prepared for the U.S. Office of Educational Research and Improvement by a panel of 14 experts at RAND, this study addresses how to improve the ways reading is taught, teachers are trained and students are assessed.

The study is available on RAND's website at www.rand.org/publications/MR/MR1465. It can also be ordered for $20 from RAND (order@rand.org) or toll-free 377-584-8642.
