SEASONS CHANGE
DESPITE A HECK OF AN INTRO, THE LBC HANDRAIL WHIZ Anthony Mosley has parted ways with DVS. Other break-ups include Stefan Janoski who left Expedition, Javier Sarmiento who left Powell for The Firm, and Charlie Wilkins and Scott Pazelt who got the bootski from Maple. Wilkins was also released from Sessions.
But just as spring always follows winter, Karl Watson was added to the Royal team, Quim Cardona has hopped on Organika, PJ Ladd was placed on Ricta, Nestor Judkins and Greg Myers joined Santa Cruz, Keilen James took the bait from Maple, Drehobi will be smokin' Revolution wheels, and Kenny Anderson left the ashes of Planet Earth to join the Chocolate family. The other Earth survivor to report is Joel Meinholz on Judah, though the rest of the squad should all have new gigs by the time you read this.
Though unsubstantiated, an anonymous source called the mag to let us know that webb Park legend Willy Santos is getting married. Congrats Big willy! On a somewhat more disturbing note, they also wanted us to know that he charged his friends $60 each to attend his bachelor party...Oh will.
STAR POWER
The internationally chic fashion rag Harper's Bazaar has commissioned Japanese pro rider Takuji Masuda to photograph for them. Further evidence of Masuda's ominous career change may be seen in his also shooting for Details magazine. Not since Bobby Fisher and Harmony Korine has anyone fallen from grace so successfully.
The NYC skate-vintage clothing market continues to spiral out of bounds. At Resurrection, old Bones Brigade poly action wear is popping for three bills and up, while dirty down Van Dorens are a buck and a half. Over on the lower east side at A Life Pivington Club, sneaker pimps are paying $800 for diamond set shell toes. Air Jordans--not reissues--are still swelling large.
Tom Green is producing a new television pilot about skateboarding for the Warner Brothers network Involved is Matt Milligan, who might be acting rather than playing himself. Director Brett Ratner was not able to corral Glen E Friedman to play himself in the upcoming Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs #3. GEF reportedly turned down the opportunity to be incarcerated in the prison cell next to Sir Anthony Hopkins and Doctor Hannibal Lecter.
Perhaps the specter of acting like a psychotic murderer was too much of a stretch for Friedman, who currently seems pre-occupied with getting another printing of his sold out Legends of DT book going. The right Reverend Run of Run DMC did do the Dragon gig though, and can be viewed cleaning out a toilet.
Grove Press has released a few uncorrected proof advance copies of Jocko Weyland's book The Answer is Never, A Skateboarder's History of the World. These unfiltered pre-press units are already hot commodities amongst the collector crowd. Expect some film flam mogul to option screen rights for this one.
CURTAIN CALL
Lawsuits over the highly visible film Dagtown and Z Boys are afoot, so the word around the kennel has it.
According to a piece authored by one-time Alva confidant Michel Cicero in a local Cali paper, Nathan Pratt and Chris Cahill are both said to be upset over their respective portrayals without a written release. Vans honcho Jay Wilson has gone so far as to state that there exist no substantive legal issues and all will be worked out.
To fulfill everyone's craving for the massive over exposure of DTZB, a little clarification is in order. What are they doing now? Producer! director Stacy Peralta is working with Fred Durst Art Linson and David Fincher on the upcoming Lards of Dogtown drama. Peralta is also doing a Vans Triple Crown docu on the Hawaiian Pipeline Masters surfing contest and The Search For Captain Zero with Sean Penn. Negotiations over the film version of the life of slider Mild Dora are also reportedly underway between Peralta, his sometime co-producer Agi Orsi, and Aussie filmmaker/ Quiksilver power broker Harry Hodge. As for Ms Orsi, the producer of DTZB is working with Stephen Spielberg's SKG Dreamworks on The Betty Schimmel Story, with Universal on Cowboys Are My Weakness, and is producing The Next Big Thing. Agi Orsi was also featured in Hemp World magazine where she extolled the virtues of the natural fiber and lectured in Hungarian. Vans Inc is also working on a slew of projects including the long gestating animated se ries The Lunatic. The question remains to be answered whether or not there is "any money in skate films."
RAW DOGS
Dwindle Distribution is rumored to be somehow linked to Dogtown the skate company. Steve Rocco has been seen as of late in Venice, CA, near the Red Dog compound.
Jay Adams is said to be off Indy and On Grind King. As for his proposed swastika-adorned Death Box graphic, it will certainly get the moral majority discussion groups quivering. Jay Boy is said to be set for a key grip slot on the Lords production.
And as for the unfortunate wreck of CR Stecyk, he was quoted in the aforementioned newspaper expose as saying that he knew "nothing about anything," and he attributed this to "the gods." Perhaps his rather odd behavior is attributable to his widely-reported head trauma Another fine Stecyk moment occurred at a DTZB Vans opening where CR was overheard telling Jay Wilson "Not only is my lawyer smarter than yours, but she has way better tits." He was with a beautiful blonde and she in fact was his legal counsel, so maybe...
