Bust or bail - Brief Article

Thrasher Magazine, July, 2002 by Steve Randall

The idea of a best trick contest is wonderful. Bust or bail-that's about it. Volcom threw a shindig where they had some bands, some kegs, and some skaters. Sounds great. They rigged up some janky shit in their warehouse loading dock and got down to business. Basically there was a rail and a jump, each to be judged differently. While some went for blast off, others went for broke on the rail contraption.

The bands sucked,a car got wrecked, and here's the breakdown: Paul Machnau showed up late with a black eye and socked up burly lipslides over the blaster. He's gnar. Salman Agah tried to switchflip the bar a thousand times, finally stuck it, focused his board, and made 800 bucks ($200 more went to one of the judges).

So I heard the rail was going off with both sides getting ripped. Appleyard got a nollie frontboard and Greg Lutzka had a nose-grind. Others of mention might include Marcus Bandy, feeble to backlip a thousand times later, and the Brazilian monster Wolnei Santos' kickflip 50-50. After time he got a guitar for his effort. Results are as follows.

RESULTS

Big Juker:

Paul Machnau, lipslide over the bar, $1500;

Salman Agah, switch flip, $1000.

Flat Bar:

Mark Appleyard, nollie frontboard, $1500; Greg Lutzka, frontside nosegrind coast to coast, $1000.
