BIRD TURD
NEVER ONE TO BE OUTDONE WHEN IT COMES TO EXPOSURE, Tony Hawk is off working on his Boom Boom Huckjam, which is "an unprecedented array of alternative athletes and musicians" on a 24 city arena tour. Tony's Las Vegas premiere will be made into a 60-minute TV special for ESPN. Involved in the Huck shuck are The Offspring, Social Distortion, Sergie Ventura, Lincoln Ueda, Andy MacDonald, Bucky Lasek and Bob Burnquist.
Matt Hoffman will lead the BMX contingent while Carey Hart will head the motocross. Andy Mac, who never misses any workable promotional activity, will front a Nick-TV show entitled the Maximum Rocket Power Comes.
NEW DEAL
After a short whirlwind courtship, ex-dick-head Brad Staba got married to Santa Rosa Julia... Good job, love birds!
Zero landed another marauder, with new pro Chris Cole adding his name and footage tape to the Zero program and their upcoming Dying to Live video. In an unrelated deal, Zero ATV John Rattray was released from Circa.
Though no premiere date is known to insiders, the Flip video is rumored to hitting the big screen and, soon after, all the little ones by the time you read this. Watch your ass!
PJ Ladd's video PJ's Wonderful Horrible Life from Coliseum is the tape kids are talking about on both coasts. Go get it, freaks!
Tosh is riding for Thunder trucks, which must be nice to look at while recovering from ankle surgery.
MOD SQUAD
San Jo mod Louie Barletta will take his feet out of his creepers and into Osiris shoes. Though Chris "Dune" Pastras' appointment to management position at the big O has been confirmed, the rumor of Jason Lee taking over at Duffs is just that.
Brazilian boomerang Carlos De Andrade has turned in his stone to ride for Ezekiel clothing. Who knows if Satva still rides for Ezekiel, but he has been given his own company at Imperial. Judah Skateboards is Leung's baby and has Mike Barker, Adam Crew, Andy Bautista and toilet-shy ripper Dustin Charlton covering the am duties. Judah's sister company 151 has added two big scoops of Pat with tregenerian am Pat Smith and Pat "The Street Rake" Rakestraw filling the am slots. 151 pro Neil Heddings has left the fold, however, to start his own gig with legendary Burnside ripper/vomiter Pigpen.
FARE WELL
RIP Bobby Turner. The tech board building ace and slalom leader is dead of a heart attack.
RIP Mad Marc Rude. The artist and musician who was responsible for several notable Alva graphics was sent off in a ribald LA wake by the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo Lodge. Those present included Melanie Berry, John Pochna, Robert and Suzanne Williams, Skatemaster Tate, Hope Urban, Tequila Mockingbird, Pleasant G, Munsky and Steve Samioff.
RIP Kevin Boyle. The artist turned curator succumbed to cancer. Boyle's accomplishments included creating graphics for such old schoolers as Rich Harbour and David Nuuhiwwa, as well as curating shows of skate, surf and hot rod artists at the California Museum of Photography in Riverside.
Did reclusive skateboard truck manumagnate Erik Swenson actually issue Rick Blackhart a cell phone so that E could repeatedly call him, say nothing, and immediately hang up?
HOT DOGS
Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Relax, Paper, and the Wall Street Journal are amongst the titles doing pieces on the Dogtown and Z Boyz film. Even MTV has decided to do a half hour special on the title. DTZB won best documentary at the Independent Spirit Film Awards and also placed in the top 10 doc's at the Academy Awards. Bob Biniak, Paul Constantineau, Skip Engblom, Paul Crowder, Tony Alva, Agi Orsi, and Stacy Peralta crowded on stage to accept their award in a giant circus tent that had been erected on Santa Monica's beach parking lot. All of the obvious connections between the home town boys' triumph and the old neighborhood were apparently too much for Tony Alva who had to be restrained after he hugged Peralta excessively on international television. Just when TA's mates feared for the worst, due to the aforementioned outbreak of maudlin sentimentality, Alva regained his sanity and began overtly plugging his products.
The Stacy Peralta penned, Art Linson produced, New Line Films theatrical project on what other subject matter but Dogtown is also said to be proceeding. This fictionalized version is somehow related to the past Spin magazine article "Lords of Dogtown."
Zoo York is opening a retail boutique in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. Expect Harold Hunter to become a big fashion name in hotspot Nippon.
WEGAN PEACH
Zero One Gallery in Los Angeles is presenting some more art by Ed Templeton. Also on Ed's aesthetic agenda are 1000-plus hand painted single shoe units via Emerica.
The Associated Press ran a photo of a Palestinian refugee girl skating next to a sewer in the camp of Ein el-Hilweh near Sideon. The shot appeared in newspapers around the globe, providing the only positive commentary on the dire political situation thereabouts.
An Independent Trucks 25th anniversary photo shoot was recently disrupted when Steve Olson refused to appear in it by himself. Rather than being seen solo, Bulky chose to be portrayed catamaraning with Doctor Rick Blackhart, Duane Peters, and David Hackett. In a separate disjointed development, Olson also appeared the following day at the San Francisco Presidio slalom meet with Blackhart, Duane and Hackett under the banner of Black Leather Racing. The meet was a solemn affair in view of the passing of Bobby Turner, although the top four finalists all rode using Turner's wheels in tribute. Charlie Ransom took first followed by Dunn, Masey, and Olson.
