Vaux

Thrasher Magazine, August, 2003

Jiczen

THE INSTANT the three-pronged guitar attack of opening track "Set It To Blow" body slams its way out of the speakers, it's clear that Vaux's sophomore album, There Must Be Some Way To Stop Them, has nothing in common with the watery punk-lite and dumbed-down nu-metal currently being peddled on TRL. From tightly-wound, Helmet-on-amphetamines paint-peelers like "Fame" and "Ride Out Bitch" to the Sunny Day Real Estate-on-steroids juggernaut "Switched On," from the Radiohead-in-a-knifefight-with-Trail-Of-Dead hyperballads "At Your Will" and "Four-Cornered Lives" to the Master Of Puppets-esque album coda "Shot In The Back," There Must Be Some Way To Stop Them offers something for everyone yet somehow sounds like nothing else.

Do you skate? Good?

Yes, Joe and Adam skate. Are we good? Shit pussy, what? Check out the Millennium issue of Thrasher in the Photograffiti section. Adam does a ticked wallie boardslide on a highway barrier!

Where is your favorite local place to skate when you're not touring?

Denver park.

Anyone of you guys ever been hurt really bad from skating?

Adam: Broken ankle and mental injuries. So who is one of your favorite skaters out there and why?

Jamie Thomas--style, attitude, the way he presents himself.

If you could change one thing about your band what would it be?

Nothing at all.

What happened to Ryders' last name?

The kid's an idiot, it comes from his upbringing, His parents are probably idiots too.

Nicknames?

Joe's nickname is Captain Red Bone, Reason: Weiner's Circle Chicago, Illinois.

Who writes the lyrics to the songs, or is your song writing process collaborative?

Quentin writes the lyrics to the songs. The writing process is a collaborative and non-collaborative activity. Some of the writing is done at home and at practice on an individual basis. But the songs are usually added to and completed at practice amongst the band.

How will your lives change after the release of

There Must Be Some Way?

Hopefully our lives won't change. We like what we've got right now. We love our fans. Maybe and hopefully we'll just have more fans. That would be nice.

Which city or venue has been your favorite experience so far?

On this tour with The Used, Coheed and Cambria, and STUN, it would have to be Tucson, Arizona--great crowd and a great time.

When you're not on tour, what does your average day consist of?

We're always on tour now, but when we have a day off it's like Elvis says, "Taking care of business;" which usually consists of e-mails and skateboards.

What is the very worst thing about going out on the Warped Tour?

The heat and long drives.

What is the biggest problem right now with the music industry?

Suits, and just business in general. Where's the ethics in this business? They take all of the fun out it.

If there was one thing you could change in the music industry what would it be?

More power to the musicians. It would be nice to see a band make some money off of their recordings.

Is downloading and burning music stealing?

Vaux sextet is. Greg (guitar/keyboards), Joe (drums), Ryder (bass), Quentin (lead vocals), Chris (guitar) and Adam (guitar)

No.
