Army of one

Thrasher Magazine, July, 2004 by Jason Lewis

I am so glad to read and buy your mags over here in this forsaken country, Afghanistan, city of Bagram, where many poor Afghanis work for lass than a dollar a day. I have now been in this sandy mountainous region of crap for seven months now and it still sucks pretty bad. Day by day continues to go by without my board and my freedom. And to me that is what skating is entirely all about, just getting on your board and thrashing, letting out your aggression on the asphalt instead of something else. Feeling completely free to do whatever you want, whenever you want, with total control over the board and the whole situation. But those days are fucked up now. For example, my hometown where I used to skate? You can't anymore, because these fuckers put blocks on top of all of the ledges. I swear that the people today just like to take everything away from us. They tell us skaters that we are supposed to go to skate parks and do what we want, do our thing only there. Well, the thing is, they don't know a damn thing because to me the street is the soul of skateboarding. It's the freedom of just letting go and zoning out in your little world. However, do not get me wrong. I also love to skate those few skateparks, such as the Van skatepark and a couple of other good ones. In a few months I'll be able to get on board.
