A method to the madness of JT Aultz

Thrasher Magazine, Jan, 2005 by Michael Burnett

What's your favorite story that Real team manager Jasin Phares has told you?

There're lots of good ones. He's definitely one of the world's best storytellers. I guess it would have to be the one about when he was a kid and got in trouble at his friend's house messing with the family's bulldog.

Yeah. I think I've heard that one.

It's the kind of story that's not as good when someone else tells it.

Yeah. Compare and contrast the Real team manager, Jasin Phares, with 88 team manager Lance Conklin.

They're both rad. It's cool to have dudes looking out for you.

But who would win in a drinking contest?

That's a tough one. They should try it. Conklin, probably.

How would you describe Conklin's skin tone?

Red. More in the red and pink area.

Having spent so much time around drinkers, do you feel like you kind of have an idea of what being drunk must feel like?

Yeah. A little bit. But I've drank a little bit, too.

What? Since when?

I drank two Guinnesses on my 22nd birthday.

What pushed you over the edge?

I wasn't hardcore about it. I just gave it a try.

Did it make you feel funky?

No. Well, yeah. A little bit.

I was about to ask if you're going to be one of those dudes that starts drinking and smoking at 28.

Yeah. That's weird when they go from one extreme to another.

What are the chances of you finding the Lord in the near future?

The Lord? Kind of low, I guess.

Are you worried about Ramondetta's King of the Road 666 tattoo?

Yeah. I didn't even know if that was real or not. That's huge! I'm not too worried, though. Peter can handle it. It looks bad ass.

As a largely non-drinker, do you ever have to be the voice of reason when you're around people who are getting wasted and making bad decisions?

Yeah. I've got one. In Tampa I was with Lance and he was getting wasted. We were at some goth club and he started yelling at everyone. There was a kid with a bandana, and he's all, "What's up Tupac!" just trying to rile everyone, basically. Then this cop comes up. I'm just sitting there and the cop says, "Man, if you don't get your friend out of here right now I'm gonna take him straight down to jail!" I look over and Lance is flipping the cop off from 10-feet away and calling him a faggot.

Are you motivated more by positive or negative factors?

I think negative. I bet a lot on tricks, and I think the thought of losing money pushes me way more than the thought of making money. I think, "Fuck, if I don't do this I owe 100 bucks!"

What else will push you over the edge to work through your nervous ticks and try the maneuver?

The best thing is probably when a cop shows up. As weird as that sounds, I sometimes can't try a trick until I know I absolutely have to.

So the other night I should have had someone in a cop outfit come around the corner every so often?

Yeah. That's what Ed Dominick always says--he's going to hire a security guard to follow us to spots.

What do you call that noseblunt slide lapover trick?

I don't know. A noseblunt transfer maybe?

May I suggest the Aultz Slide?

No.

Have you seen anyone else do it before you started busting out with it?
