A method to the madness of JT Aultz

Thrasher Magazine, Jan, 2005 by Michael Burnett

Yeah. I'd seen people do them on ledges. I'm pretty sure Daewon did one.

At the same time, I think we could safely call it the Aultz Slide if you like. I could work on that.

All right, done deal.

Did it hurt your feeling when Markovich quit 88?

He didn't quit. He got kicked off.

I heard he wrote some hurtful things on the Internet. Did you take it personally?

It was lame. Ed Dominick is one of the coolest dudes you'll ever meet, and I guess he wrote a bunch of lame stuff about Ed. It sucked.

Does it ever effect your friendships when a dude quits a team?

Yeah, I guess. Sometimes you're friends, but not good enough friends where you'd hang out if you weren't on the same team. I didn't really know Markovich that well. He was cool every time I met him, but I probably won't see him very often now.

Have you ever gotten on the Internet to talk about a problem?

No, I don't really know how to work computers that well. I have an old Mac G3 that I bought off my friend for 100 bucks.

Is the new 88 video going to be more like a Questionable or more like a Logic 4?

Definitely not a Questionable, but definitely not a Logic 4.

C'mon, you're supposed to say, "The 88 video is going to make Questionable look like Logic 4!"

Oh, okay. Yeah.

What part are you most excited to see?

I've seen a lot of the parts. Corey's and Hewitt's parts are insane! Those two dudes are the only ones I've seen that are mostly done. People are gonna freak out.

What's your song for the video?

"Civilization's Dying," by Zero Boys.

Sweet. Were skaters known as the cool kids when you were in high school?

No, it was never like that. There were probably three skaters at my school. The cool kids were probably the jocks.

Fucking jocks, man. The Real program really seems to be heating up. What's your assessment of the present roster?

It's fucking awesome. The team's really good with Peter, Darrell and Ernie and shit.

Pound for pound, who's the baddest dude on the team?

Pound for pound it's gotta be Dennis.

Why is he so mysterious?

I know him, so he doesn't seem too mysterious to me. I think the reason why people may not know how good he is is because he doesn't like to film and shoot photos. He wakes up at like eight and goes and skates by himself. By the time everybody wakes up he's over it 'cause he's already been skating all day. He's not the kind of guy that always has a camera on him.

What makes Ernie Torres tick?

I don't know. The kid's just gnarly. He's awesome to skate with.

Is there any dude on the team who's intimidating to skate with?

It's not like that at all. It's not competitive. We make bets to hype each other up and just try and have a good time.

Are there any companies you like besides Real? Yeah. Anti-Hero and Krooked and Plan B. Oh, and Skatemafia. They're sick.

Yeah. Those guys are good. Do you get to skate with Smolik very much?

Not as much as I'd like. I've got a wild story for you. We were hanging out at my friend Jimmy's house with a bunch of the Skatemafia and we hear this fight outside; a bunch of commotion. We look out and see all these big Samoan guys, but we figure it's not our deal and go back inside. Ten minutes later Smolik comes in all beat up and bloody. He's running around the house going, "Ah homie! Ah homie! Fuckin' out-of-towners!" The dudes he got in a fight with were from La Jolla, which is, like, five minutes away, but because they weren't from Clairemont he was calling them out-of-towners. "Fuckin' out-of-towners, homie!" We were 15-feet away the whole time he was getting beat up, but didn't know it was him.
