The last frontier: durable, attractive storage systems aim to tame the garage - Trends

Building Products, Jan-Feb, 2003 by Stephanie Herzfeld

Two upscale storage systems want to tidy up the home's biggest junk drawer--the garage--while making the space eyecatching, too.

"We're trying to change the way the American consumer looks at the garage," says Marc Shuman, president of GarageTek. On the market since 2000, the company's system consists of a heavy-duty PVC wall grid that supports shelving, cabinets, activity racks, and more.

Gladiator GarageWorks, available since last November from this Whirlpool company, is a steel-plated system that incorporates wall panel storage and other accessories. Options include a small refrigerator and a workbench to maximize floor space.

Components of the systems, which are designed for new and existing homes, easily can be moved around. "We didn't want to limit it with built-ins, so the challenge was to make it flexible for a changing user," says Mike Ferrara, spokesman for Gladiator.

Competing storage systems and parts available at many home centers are made of less-durable materials and may not be suitable for garage storage, Ferrara claims. "Heft, quality, and durability are missing in other systems," he says. Adds Shuman: "We're not trying to be everything to everybody. We're just sticking to the garage."

However, hefty price tags may prevent GarageTek and Gladiator from furnishing the mass market. According to Shuman, a complete installed GarageTek system costs about $4,800; components for one wall cost $1,500 to $2,000. Installed by professionals, GarageTek systems are offered to home builders and remodelers through the firm's franchises and at Expo Design Centers.

A complete Gladiator system can cost up to $10,000 for a three-car garage, says Ferrara. Component prices range from $400 to $600 and are available nationwide at Lowe's. The system is installed by the purchaser

Despite the high costs, Gladiator and GarageTek research indicates that homeowners are willing to pay for top-quality, good-looking storage products. Both systems target affluent men, ages 35 and older, who actively use their garages. "Men want a cool-looking garage because it's the most visible room of the house," says Ferrara.

Spectrum Skanska is a New York-based builder that offers GarageTek as an option in its homes. Lori Klipstein, vice president of the firm's design services, says the system also appeals to women because it tidies up the garage.

As interest in these systems swells, the manufacturers expect the garage storage category to grow too; both are creating new pieces, such as floor components, to add to their systems.

"People are always concerned with space. In another five to eight years, garage systems will be offered in custom homes on a regular basis," predicts Klipstein.
