Head of the government accountability office warns of fiscal "tsunami"

New American, The, Dec 10, 2007 by John F. McManus

"It is really frustrating when the numbers are clear and compelling and when you know you have a tsunami of spending that is heading toward your shores, and yet you still have people partying on the beach. That is analogous to the situation we face. At the same time, elected officials don't like to have to make tough choices, unless or until it is necessary, because they are afraid they might lose their job." Comptroller general David Walker, in an article for Newsweek, lambasted the shortsightedness of politicians and their refusal to fix an untenable situation--"Social Security is underfunded by $6 trillion in current-dollar terms.

Medicare is underfunded by over $32 trillion."
