Street scene

Twenty-two-year-old Bobby Wald of Honolulu, Hawaii, believes that bodybuilding is more of a mental challenge than a physical one. It certainly takes a strong mind and determined will to sculpt the kind of physique this personal trainer/competitive bodybuilder proudly displays. At 5'11", Bobby weighs a lean 220 pounds, which he pares down to an even leaner and meaner 195 for competition.

Rock-solid describes the 6' 195-pound physique of Kevin Barker. The 30-year-old Saint Louis, Missouri, resident has trained with the eye of the tiger for the past five years to achieve his present level of conditioning. Kevin says he is in the process of becoming a personal trainer so he can help others reach their physique goals. And he plans to test himself in competition in the not-too-distant future.

Cy Willson of Omaha, Nebraska, takes the scientific approach to building muscle. The University of Nebraska, Omaha, student-cum-freelance nutrition/biochemistry writer has diligently applied his studies in the fields of physiology, endocrinology, pharmacology and biochemistry. At age 17, he was a 215-pounder with 15% bodyfat. Now 20 and 6'2", he weighs 228 pounds and has eight percent bodyfat. Cy plans to enter pharmacy school while continuing to develop his body along the lines of his idol, Gunter Schlierkamp.

Dexter, Michigan, is home to Joe Romine, an 18-year-old college student and certified personal trainer who has been lifting seriously for the past four years. A high-school football star before a knee injury curtailed his gridiron dreams, Joe plans to someday enter bodybuilding competition. Standing 5'9", the 180-pounder trains hard and heavy six days a week.

If you know the way to San Jose, you might look into Gold's Gym to get a glimpse of Omar Ventura, a rising young bodybuilder and juvenile probation counselor. Omar is 24, stands 5'7" and weighs 175 pounds off season, 150 at contest time, with just four percent bodyfat-a claim his photograph backs up. Omar admires the confidence of muscle studs such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Flex Wheeler, and he reaps motivation for his five-day-a-week training from FLEX magazine.
