Muscle & Fitness/Hers, April-May, 2002

If you're trying to make the transition from a nonexerciser to a regular gym attendee, First-day jitters can make you Feel like a third-grader heading off to a new school. The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association can help with this list or the top 10 things to consider on day one of your Fitness routine:

1) Ask, ask, ask. If you need help with anything -- From how to work the treadmill to Finding a stretching mat -- ask the staff at the health club.

2) Learn the lingo. Unfamiliar with words like "rep" or "set"? Ask a trainer at your gym to explain them.

3) Dress comfortably. Particularly in cool weather, choose layers so you can peel off outer layers as you get warmer.

4) Wipe down the equipment. Gym etiquette demands that you wipe down the machines and benches after you use them. No one wants to sit in other people's sweat!

5) First come, first served. IF the cardio machine you want is occupied, check For a sign-up sheet. Most clubs set a time limit for cardio equipment, so you should get your turn.

6) Share. IF you're using a weight machine when someone else wants to, let him or her work in with you. One of you does a set while the other person rests.

7) Bring a water bottle. It may be easier to stay hydrated if you water with you, rather than running back and forth to the water fountain.

8) Don't forget a towel. Check with the gym to see if it supplies workout or shower towels. If not, pack your own.

9) Rack your weights. Don't leave your dumbbells and barbells all over the Floor. Put them back where they belong so other trainees can Find them.

10) Be smell-conscious. Avoid wearing strong-smelling, heavy cologne or perfume. It may be a beautiful scent to you, but could be an allergy waiting to happen For someone else.
