Facts on flakes - Extra Bodyfit - dandruff - Brief Article

Muscle & Fitness/Hers, April-May, 2002

Bet you'll scratch your head on this one: Up to 97% of the U.S. population is estimated to have dandruff at some point in their lives. The natural process of sloughing off old skin cells on the scalp and manufacturing replacements is usually very orderly and complete. In the case of dandruff, however, new cells are produced too quickly, resulting in more cells sloughing off at once in larger, noticeable flakes. There's no known cure, but treatments are available to control and manage the condition. Experts also recommend the following tips to help prevent the occurrence or severity of dandruff:

* Avoid tight-fitting hats or those made from irritating fibers, such as wool.

* Watch your intake of sugar, fat and starch, which can be triggers for dandruff.

* Avoid excessive use of hair-coloring products and/or hot hair appliances.

* Avoid dry, indoor heating. Consider using a humidifier at home and in your office to keep humidity levels higher.

* Shampoo hair regularly. In stubborn cases, use a medicated shampoo. If dandruff persists or if your scalp becomes irritated or severely itchy, see a physician.
