Boredom busters - Extra Training - tips for maintaining enthusiasm - Brief Article

Muscle & Fitness/Hers, June, 2002

Be it relationships, jobs or excersise, we often find that the same of things just isn't as exciting as it used to be. When enthusiasm ebbs, try these strategies to break out of your rut and put the sparks back into your workout!

* TAKE SOME TIME OFF. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so take a break from working out and enjoy some of the other great things in life. When it's time to return to the gym you'll feel refreshed and ready to start training again.

* HIRE A PERSONAL TRAINER. If even for just a couple of sessions to revamp your program show you some new training techniques or simply provide a change of pace. A trainer can also spot any bad habits that might be holding you back from reaching your goals, such as using bad form or not working at the appropriate intensity.

* TAKE IT PILATES OR YOGA CLASS. Rejuvenating and unexpectedly satisfying, these classes work your body in unaccustomed ways. Rising to new challenges also improves mind, body and spirit.

* DO DROP SETS. Every few workouts, try this to help push your muscles past plateaus. With your usual weight do 12-15 reps. When your muscles tire, drop the poundage and squeeze out another 6-8 reps. Repeat until the lightest weight seems heavy.

* TRAIN FOR A RACE OR A SPORTS EVENT. Nothing will get your adrenalin rushing faster than standing at the start line of a race. If you run: enter a 10K. If you can swim and bike try a sprint distance trathlon. Pushing the limits of your personal bests will be addicting!
