Sports don't stunt growth - Extra Training - young women and sports - Brief Article

Muscle & Fitness/Hers, June, 2002

Does intensive training stunt young women s physical development? Researchers report in the British Journal of Sports Medicine that according to statistics, the body size of young female athletes from most sports is the same or greater than 50% of the general population. It's really only ballet dancers and gymnasts who are smaller, and who tend to sexually mature later than the general population.

It may be that girls of this stature self-select these sports, rather than the sport itself stunting growth, study authors suggest.
