Be on the lookout - Extra Bodyfit - Brief Article

If you were asked what part of the body is most susceptible to the cruel effects of the sun's rays, you might say the cheek, back or leg. You'd be wrong: It's the eyelid. Basal cell carcinoma of the eyelid accounts for 20% of all skin cancer cases, and what's so alarming is that if the skin cancer extends deeper than the structure of the eye, the eye itself may have to be removed, explains Joseph Eviatar, MD, FACS, who practices in New York City. In less severe circumstances, scarring, loss of vision and infection can all occur.

As with other areas of the body, skin cancer of the eyelid can be avoided by using sunblock, sunglasses and hats. If you see new and unfamiliar lesions on the eyelid, particularly if you're fair-skinned, bring it to the attention of a qualified physician immediately.
