Feet in the hot seat

Muscle & Fitness/Hers, August, 2003 by Kristina Haar

When it comes to choosing a cool pair of athletic shoes this summer, opt for a lighter-colored pair if you routinely exercise outdoors. A study in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association found that the temperature inside a pair of black shoes was about 7 degrees hotter than in white shoes after exposure to an infrared heat lamp for 15 minutes.

After 30 minutes, the black shoes were about 11 degrees hotter.
