Coping with criticism

Muscle & Fitness/Hers, Nov, 2003

I picked up your magazine today and wanted to thank you for the article "When Criticism Cuts" [August 2003]. I'm a personal trainer in Vancouver, British Columbia. I've had thoughts about competing since giving birth to my second son, but I've always had fears and doubts about my ability to accomplish this goal.

Not long ago, I had the fortune of meeting Linda Cusmano, who organizes the WNSO fitness competition out west, and I got involved volunteering at the 2003 event. I was totally hooked! The energy and enthusiasm was amazing and it made me realize that if I wanted to do it badly enough, I could. Since that time, Linda formed a team of women, which I'm now a part of, that is supporting each other while we prepare for the 2004 events. Without the support of this group. I don't know how I would keep at it. Since the beginning of June, I have made very serious commitments to training and eating all the right foods. My family and friends try to be supportive, but I know that they don't really get it. Your article gave me some perspective as to what my other friends and family may be feeling. This article came at a time when I needed it the most.
