Long-bed lathe

Automotive Design & Production,  Jan, 2003

Who: Haas Automation, Inc. (Oxnard, CA)

What: SL-40L Long-Bed lathe

Why you should care: The long-bed lathe was designed specifically for processing long shafts and tubing where deep-hole drilling and boring are involved. Drive shafts are a key automotive component it can process.

Pertinent Data: The SL-40L provides a maximum cutting length of 80 in., which is almost double that of the standard shorter bed model. It has a maximum cutting diameter of 25.5 in., and features a 15 in. chuck and an A2-8 spindle nose with a bar capacity of 4.0 in. The 40 h.p. vector dual drive system yields 1,400 ft-lbs. of spindle torque. A Big Bore version upgrades the spindle nose and has a 6.75 in. through-bore. An optional steady-rest platform provides additional support for turning and boring long shafts.
