"This unit will help those companies in need of providing Six Sigma quality in a lean manufacturing environment by placing a plug-and-play inspection machine on the shop floor," says Bill Gruber, president of Brown and Sharpe (North Kingstown, RI). Designed for the supplier now facing the need to prove its products meet a strict statistical process control regimen, the One features a one-piece cast polymer composite base with an aluminum/silicon carbide matrix for the X- axis carriage and compact Z-axis ram. Sealed recirculating bearing packs are used in place of air bearings to eliminate the need for an outside air supply and resist contamination. A software tutorial takes users through installation and setup, and a self-verification diagnostic makes sure the unit is running to peak efficiency. The price? The entry level One starts at $33,000, has an 8 micron volumetric accuracy, and weighs 2,100 lb. A larger 10 micron version starts at $33,000 and weighs 2,600 lb.
