Automotive Design & Production, Feb, 2003
Who: KPT/Kaiser Precision Tooling Inc. (Elk Grove Village, IL)
What: ASM 90 quick change clamping chuck
Why you should care: The ASM 90 is only 90mm in diameter but it accepts the same clamping knob as chucks twice its size making it a good solution for smaller machines with limited travel range. The KPT/Unilock workholding system on which the ASM 90 is based requires that a workpiece reference location be captured only once and then the data is kept in the machine's CNC program, so workpieces can be moved to different machines without having to re-locate the reference point.
Pertinent Data: The spring-based mechanical clamping system supports an air boost that increases clamping force by 30% over spring retention alone. The KPT/Unilock chuck has .0002 in. repeatable positioning accuracy with retention forces that start at 7,868 ft. lb. per chuck.
