There is a space between hand-held measuring instruments and high-end coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) that is filled by all manner of devices. One of the latest in that space is a bridge-type machine, the Swiss-made tesa micro-hite 3d from Brown & Sharpe tesa (North Kingstown, RI; www.brownandsharpe.com). This unit has a measuring volume of 460 X 510 X 420 mm. This is a manually manipulated machine. Air bearings provide smooth moves, and the patented Zmouse device on the column, which works like the mouse attached to a computer, permits interaction with the tesa reflex software that not only helps the operator determine how to measure, but which provides clear, understandable results, Speaking of results: the CMM provides an accuracy and repeatability of 3 [micro]m.
