Small, powerful & inexpensive

Automotive Design & Production,  June, 2004

Although pneumatic cylinders have long been used as actuators for Cartesian-style mechanisms, IAI America (Itasca, IL: www.intelligentactuator.com) has focused on the development of electromechanical alternatives. Among the benefits are multiple positioning, programmable acceleration and deceleration, and positioning within [+ or -]0.02 mm. The company's latest product is the RCP2 Robo Cylinder, which is a compact unit that, in the rod-type configuration, offers a maximum horizontal payload of 55 kg, a maximum vertical payload of 26 kg, and a push force of 800 N. According to the company, the operating cost is 67% less than a comparable air cylinder. Prices for the actuator, controller and cable start at under $750.
