Automotive Design & Production, Sept, 2002
Information is playing a more important role in manufacturing efficiencies. For example, using an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system can help achieve better coordination among operations. Ease in point is the deployment of an ERP system, JobBOSS Software (from Kewill ERF, Minneapolis, MN) is providing advantages at Delphi Corp. Just listen to Phillip Madarasz, Deployment and System manager at Delphi's Facility in Flint, Michigan: "By eliminating several unconnected databases and placing our vital business information into JobBOSS, we can now better respond to the constantly changing environment of building prototype parts. As an example, we've been able to reduce our response time in providing internal sales reports by 75%. And we've reorganized the way we enter, plan and track our sales orders, allowing us to reduce our administrative headcount by 40%."

The whole issue of speed is key to what Madarasz is looking For. As he puts it, "The nature of our business dictates, above all, rapid response. We now can answer many of our customers' questions in minutes rather than hours or days. This capability alone helps build stronger customer relations and as a bonus gives us more time to concentrate on the job of building world-class quality prototype parts."
Unlike older mainframe, batch-loaded systems, JobBOSS information about costs, time and materials is available on the screen in real-time. The 6.0 version interfaces with many CAD systems, so CAD drawings can be brought in and attached to individual orders.
Delphi has plans For implementation throughout its North American plants. Madarasz notes of the ERP system, "It has added a new level of discipline and regimen to our operating practices and will continue to pay valuable dividends in the Future."
