Laser tool monitoring - In Gear

Automotive Design & Production, Sept, 2002

Who: Blum LMT, Inc. (Fort Mitchell, KY)

What: LaserControl tool monitoring system

Why you should care: LaserControl uses a visible red light laser to accomplish in-machine tool length and diameter measuring and tool breakage detection with a minimal effect on process time. The positions of all of the cutters in multi-cutter tools can be monitored in radial and axial directions while the tool rotates at full nominal rpm, and any setting or clamping errors can be quickly identified. Blum says that LaserControl is effective in high-speed, high-velocity and high-accuracy machining applications that require tool integrity.

Pertinent Data: Optical components are protected from chips and coolant by a pneumatic shutter and air barrier. The laser used is a Class 2 VDE 0837, which does not require specific protective measures. Software measuring routines have been developed for many leading CNC controls. Measuring cycle routines include: length of concentric tools, tap drills, engraving needles and reamers and acentric tools like endmills and facemills.
