Patchett wins the Orange Prize for Fiction

American author Ann Patchett has won the Orange Prize for Fiction - a GBP30,000 prize which is awarded only to women.

Her novel 'Bel Canto', which features a group of Latin terrorists who discover their intended kidnap target has stayed at home to watch a soap opera, won her the award. The prize is awarded each year with the funds being provided by an anonymous donor.

The finalists in the award were; Anna Burns, 'No Bones'; Helen Dunmore, 'The Siege', Maggie Gee, 'The White Family'; Chloe Hooper; 'A Child's Book of True Crime'; Ann Patchett, 'Bel Canto' and Sarah Waters, 'Fingersmith'.
