US author Valerie Martin has won this year's Orange Prize for Fiction.
Martin won the award for her novel 'Property', beating the other shortlisted writers Donna Tartt, Zadie Smith, Shena Mckay, Anne Donovan and Carol Shields. The book, set in the American Deep South, centres on the life of Manon Gaudet, the unhappily married wife of a Louisiana sugar plantation owner. It is said to explore themes of power, ownership, resistance and freedom.
