The inaugural Individual World Poetry Slam Championship has been won by performance poet, Buddy Wakefield.

Wakefield, 29, from Seattle, beat off competition from 36 other slam poets in Greenville, South Carolina, and said it was a real honour to win in front of his contemporaries.

Wakefield has been a performance poet for five years, and is the cofounder of the Bullhorn Collective, which represents 30 top American slam poets, reports The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
