An organisation that represents academic publishers in the US has criticised the plans by Internet company Google Inc to make university library books searchable online.

As part of the Google Print for Libraries project, Google will be scanning some 15 million volumes from the libraries of Stanford, Michigan and Harvard universities, and the New York Public Library. Also included will be out-of-copyright books from Oxford University in the UK.

The Association of American University Presses has sent a six-page letter to Google outlining its concerns about the project, and stating that it "appears to involve systematic infringement of copyright on a massive scale".
