Andrea Levy's novel Small Island was announced on Monday (3 October) as the winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction's "best of the best" award at an awards ceremony in London, UK.
Levy's book, which is set in 1914 and tells the tale of Jamaican-born Hortense Joseph in a post-war England, has already sold 466,000 copies in the UK and has been awarded both the Whitbread Book of the Year award and the Commonwealth Writers Prize for 2005.
