A total of 3,778 books have been returned to Peru by Chile after the country's military removed them from the national library in Peru in 1881 during the 1879-1883 War of the Pacific.

The books, which date from the 16th to 19th centuries, contain volumes authored in languages including Greek, Latin, French and Spanish.

The books were returned to Peru via DHL and are set to be returned to the national library in Lima.

According to Fox News, the national director of libraries, archives and museums in Chile, Nivia Palma, has presented the books to Peruvian officials.
