BBC acquires Lonely Planet

Australia based travel book publisher Lonely Planet has been acquired by the BBC.

According to The Herald Sun, BBC Worldwide has issued a statement confirming that it aims to build the Lonely Planet franchise around the world.

A 25% holding in the company will be retained by its founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
