New Zealand's Esther Glen Award has been presented to Bernard Beckett at the LIANZA Children's Book Awards ceremony in Rotorua on Tuesday (11 September).

Beckett, a teacher and writer from Wellington, received the award for his young adult science fiction book entitled Genesis: a novel.

The Esther Glen Award was established in 1944 and is presented to the author for their contribution to literature for children.

Ben Galbraith received The Russell Clark Award for his picture book entitled The Three Fishing Brothers Gruff. In addition, this year's Elsie Locke Award went to Leon Davidson for his second book Red Haze: Australians & New Zealanders in Vietnam.

The Russell Clark Award was reportedly established in 1975 and recognises a distinguished contribution to illustrated children's books. The Elsie Locke Award was established in 1986 and celebrates contributions to non-fiction for young people.

Artist Robyn Kahukiwa was awarded the Te Kura Pounamu for her book Matatuhi, translated by Kiwa Hammond. The Te Kura Pounamu, which was established in 1995, reportedly recognises a work in te reo Maori that promotes excellence in library resources in Maori and makes a distinguished contribution to literature for children and young people.
