Get Down Under - Sydney's nightlife - Brief Article

Talk, Nov, 2001 by Heather Larson

Got the chills? Here's our crib sheet to a city where spring has already sprung.

WHERE TO DANCE: Tank

Sydney's nightlife scene is notoriously small and cliquey, but that's good news for you, mate. "When a new place opens, it's like bees to honey," one somewhat embarrassed local confesses. Ground zero right now is this vast dance club, which boasts world-class DJs, three bars, and a door policy you just might crack with the right designer duds (we mean it: dress up). Less discriminating tastes will find the Chinese Laundry, a sufficiently hip club nearby, more to their liking.

WHERE TO EAT: Hugo's Lounge

Okay, for brekkie you nibbled on ricotta pancakes at Bills in Darlinghurst. Charming. And you've breezed through Lucio's in Paddington--superb Italian cuisine but terribly ungroovy. Come nightfall you'll want to slip on an outfit that matches your deep Down Under tan and head to Hugo's Lounge, Sydney's reigning hot spot, where your ocean trout confit comes with a side of urban attitude. You know the drill: slick decor, strenuous bar scene, lusty patrons. Of course, you'll wonder how the young and moneyed manage to be so impossibly skinny while downing veal medallions with truffles and foie gras. But isn't the lighting simply flawless?
