LA zoo kicks off new recycling program - Back Page - with funding from the California Department of Conservation - Brief Article

The Los Angeles Zoo has introduced Rascal, the recycling raccoon, and announced a $160,400 grant from the California Department of Conservation. The grant will allow the zoo to upgrade current recycling efforts on a larger scale throughout the park. The grant includes money for bins and beverage containers, teacher packets and student coloring books and a new play park recycling center.
The state grant recycling application was submitted by Los Angeles and its Department of Sanitation on behalf of the zoo. The zoo's green waste recycling program has collected 8.5 tons of landscaping clippings per week.
