Tidewater Fibre Corp., Chesapeake, Va., has been selected as the top Large Recycling Business by the Virginia Recycling Association (VRA).

The company collects and processes curbside recyclables from some of Virginia's largest cities and surrounding communities. Tidewater operates the first large single-stream materials recovery facility (MRF) on the East Coast, in Chesapeake, and has just completed equipment installation work at its second single stream MRF, near Richmond.

Both MRFs use screening technology to achieve high recovery rates from single-stream compacted materials collected at curbside.

"Just as the trend in trash collection has changed over the years to automation, so will recycling collection services," says Michael Benedetto, executive vice president with Tidewater Fibre Corp. "We're proud to be recognized as a leader of single-stream collection and processing services."

Tidewater Fibre Corp. was founded in 1973 by the Benedetto family. The company recycles about one million pounds of paper and other recyclables each day.

In mid-October, the company held an open house at its new MRF in Chester, which features a Lubo and Bollegraaf sorting system installed by Van Dyk Baler Corp., Stamford, Conn., and a high-volume baler made by IPS Baler Inc., Baxley, Ga.
