Lexington implements new recycling system - Municipal Recycling - Kentucky - Brief Article

Recycling Today, Nov, 2002

Kentucky's Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government's Division of Solid Waste has begun converting to a single-stream-plus-glass recycling system with the distribution of new bins.

The new 65-gallon Rosie bins are slightly taller and wider than the 40-gallon bins they are replacing. The new system promises to make recycling participation easier by allowing residents to commingle plastics, paper and aluminum cans. The system also enables residents to add corrugated boxes and chipboard.

Glass will be the only commodity collected separately. The glass collection bin will rest on the rear portion of the inside rim of the cart.

According to the Division of Solid Waste, the primary goal in implementing the new system is to increase the volume of recyclables collected and to encourage the 30,000 eligible households who currently do not have a Rosie bin to order one and to participate in the new system.
