Nebraska issues grant money

Recycling Today, March, 2004

The state of Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has awarded $1.13 million in 56 separate grants for recycling, litter cleanup and public education programs. The money came from the state's Litter Reduction and Recycling Grant Program.

The Village of Verdigre, which received $22,420 for a new building to house recycling services, was among the grant recipients. The new building will enable further expansion of recycling services in Verdigre and will extend its service area to include additional communities in Knox County.

The Five Rivers Resource Conservation & Development District received $37,173 for household hazardous waste collection events in eight counties. Partners in the events include the counties of Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson and Saline.

Burton Enterprises, located in Henderson, provides drive-through recycling services and semi-truck collection service to an eight-county area. It received $31,928 to add three loading docks to its existing building. The grant should help with continued expansion of services and enable Burbon to process greater volumes of recyclables more efficiently.

WasteCap of Lincoln received $59,595 to provide technical assistance to businesses statewide. It is developing a statewide expansion strategy to promote business waste reduction and recycling.

U.S. Recyclers Inc., Ogallala, was awarded $12,145 to purchase a recycling trailer to be placed in the Village of Venango and to collect recyclables in the community as well as in the Village of Sutherland and in the City of Arapahoe.
