Recycle Mania strikes campuses - Back Page - Brief Article
Recycling Today, May, 2002
The second annual "Recycle Mania" contest has come to a close with a new champion--Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Last year the contest pitted two universities in Ohio against each other to see which set of students could recycle the largest volume of containers, paper and other recyclables. This year, BGSU and Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., joined 2001 competitors Ohio University (OU), Athens, Ohio, and Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
BGSU won "Recycle Mania 2002" with an average weight of 48 pounds of recyclables collected per student living on campus, while OU had a final weight of 46.6 pounds per student. Miami University was third with 45.7 pounds per student and Harvard University finished last with an average of 38.9 pounds per student. Combined, the four schools collected almost 625 tons of recyclables.
"Ohio University processed 108,418 pounds more recyclables this year than last year," notes OU recycling manager Ed Newman.
