Gardening has saved my life. Okay, perhaps that's a little dramatic, but it definitely saves my perspective. In the morning, when I get out of bed, I go outside and down the steps of my deck to stand in my garden and drink in the day. The smell of the rich earth and the small sounds of green plants pushing their way toward the sun spread a sense of deep contentment through me. It s a great way to wake up! No matter how many computer glitches or press fiascos I have to deal with that day, nothing changes the fact that my morning began in silent wonder.
All too often, when I go out to breathe in the morning air, I notice that my turnips need thinning, or that I need to divide my flowers because they re crowding each other. I try not to feel too guilty as I drive off to work, leaving them uncomfortably crowded. I notice that my plants are more prone to getting eaten by bugs when they re overcrowded, or that they droop when they need water. When I take the time to thin them and water them well, they thrive, and seeing this reminds me to take time for myself, to read, to write, to see my friends, to go hiking and biking in the forest. Often my life feels overcrowded with work and bills, and I feel thirsty for introspection, meditation, and just plain fun. Taking care of my tomatoes and squashes and watching them flourish teaches me to take the time to nourish myself, as well.
So nourish yourself by digging your hands deep into the soil? Even if it s just a potted rosemary or basil in your sunny kitchen window, we can all enjoy helping plants grow and reaping the delicious and medicinal benefits.
