U.S. Korea Defense Service Medal still alive in Congress despite Pentagon inaction

VFW Magazine, June-July, 2002

Senate bill S. 999 and House bill H.R. 1935 (the Korea Defense Service Medal Act) is making steady progress in Congress. As of mid-April, the legislation had 161 cosponsors in the House and 33 in the Senate.

The co-sponsors include key members of Congress--39 on the House Armed Services Committee and 13 on the Senate Armed Services Committee. One is the ranking member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee and another the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Also among the co-sponsors is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The medal in question would recognize the service of all uniformed Americans who served in South Korea since 1954, including those presently stationed there.
