Overlooked heroism at Lang Vei

VFW Magazine, August, 2004 by John W. Mullen, Ron Shouse

The sidebar on page 16--"We Have Tanks in Our Wire!" (June)--failed to mention the role of Maj. George Quamo, who led the heroic reinforcing mission into Lang Vei. He was killed on April 14, 1968, and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Master Sgt. Charles Minnicks, who was on the mission, later wrote: "I wonder if his decoration should not be upgraded to the Medal of Honor."

As a member of B Btry., 1st Bn., 13th Marine Regt. (Artillery), we fired all day in support of Lang Vei. We placed direct 105mm-fire right on the compound. The NVA also were on top of us during this engagement. I have always sympathized with the survivors of that ordeal.
