War zone duty and combat distinct
VFW Magazine, August, 2003 by Wilfrid E. Hebert
Let me bring up what may be a controversial issue, but one that needs clarifying. There is a big distinction between serving overseas in wartime and actually seeing action against the enemy. The latter is a combat veteran.
As anyone who has ever been in war knows, only a small percentage of men participate in combat. The general public and media alike treat service in a war zone as synonymous with combat. It is not, and the distinction should be made clear.
